Focus group scene script

(Vlad enters on the phone, he is a snobby business man trying to market his products to an easy audience)

(Throughout the scene, every time somebody says something negative Vlad has the power to pause the scene and tell the audience how he is now going to insult them)

(Each character will begin by introducing themselves with a profile speech on who they are and why they are here)

Vlad:  Yeah mate, im tryna sell some of these knock of products we still have in the office. Ay! Ive got the perfect set of ladies for this focus group, the dumbest you can get! Got a couple of feisty ones in there but i can handle it no problem!

(4 women on different levels around the table - 2 of the women are 'bimbo's' inspired by Joey Essex. The other 2 women are the more nerdy type)

Anna Maria: OH MY GOD!!! BABE, WE'RE ON CAMERA!!

Amber: I know babe, alright mum! (Waving to camera and fixing her appearance)

Vlad: Right ladies, the first of these amazing beauty products is the gorgeous Katy price boobs! Would you rather these bad boys or an anorexic boob job...?

(Standing on the table is a model with oversized breasts)

Anna Maria: O-M-G...!

Amber: Oh my god, i love it!

Vlad: This is what i like to hear! And you ladies? (Gesturing to the other two nerdy girls)

Daisy: How specifically does this work? I once read a truly factual article about the posture of women and their breast size affecting this...

Thaliqua: Yes that's right! By looking at the circumference of these on this model i believe its not -

Vlad: Ladies, ladies... your getting carried away! How about you feast your eyes on the ompa lompa spray tan! A gorgeous sun kissed glow that lasts all year round you could be mistaken as a tropical goddess! Would you rather the ompa lompa spray tan or to look like an irish albino?

(A model stands on the table with bright orange skin)

Amber: Babe, this is what i was telling you about! All my mates use this tan stuff and they look amazing! Have you got any samples?

Anna Maria: Oooooh i love a sample i do!

(Vlad hands over the tanning lotion and the girls begin to smother their faces in it, not realising its orange paint)

Thaliqua: I could see how this works.. You see, when the sun uses its rays it doesn't produce a dark enough tan as quickly as this would...

Daisy: No! This stuff has acid particles in it, it could burn off the natural layers of skin...

(Vlad puts his finger up to Daisy's mouth getting her to stop talking)

Vlad: Shhh ladies, now im pretty sure you'd love to have illuminated smooth skin as suppose to 90 year old eroded skin?

Amber: Oh yeah, when my nan died her skin was like...

Anna Maria: Nasty and stuff right?!

Amber: Yeah thats it! I dont wanna look like that when im dead babe, i wanna look like im on that show... oh what's it! Ten years younger.

Daisy: But i don't see how this can change the radiance of your skin. Surely this is a con.

Thaliqua: Hmmm, I have heard the celebrities using this now a days... I could give it a try once i read through the ingredients.

Vlad: Well it that doesn't tickle  your fancy... How about the brazillian wax! Would you rather the smooth and beach body ready wax or the caveman look?

(A model with an afro in their private area)

Anna Maria: Unquestionable.. Defo the brazillian wax!

Amber: Love it!

Daisy: Now you see, the problem with having such a close wax to your private areas is...

Vlad: OK! Too much info i think there love.

Thaliqua: Nobody likes the caveman... So i suppose if i had to choose....

Vlad: You would choose the brazillian wax wouldn't you! Yeah course you would. Moving on... Ladies this is the last of the amazing products i have in store for you to take away today, at the very little price of £19.99 (smiling at camera, selling product) we have the rip a boys heart out nails because im sure you'd much rather these than to be no nail nancy!

(A model stands on the table to extra long pointed nails)

Amber: Ewwww, i mean who would want to have no nails!

Anna Maria: I get my acrylics done every two weeks and ive never been able to rip a boys heart out. Im sure these ones will work! I love em!

Daisy: You see the problem with having no nails means you can pick up bacteria from many different areas and infect the entire finger,, this can lead to -

Thaliqua: We get it, i mean its also equally as bad to have ridiculously long nails as these can cause harm to others...

Vlad: We don't call them rip a boys heart out nails for no reason!

(A summary of the focus groups thoughts are made)

Vlad: On each product i tested on these.. Lovely ladies today 3/4 of them said they would want to use it and we had amazing results!

Daisy: We didn't agree on all of them!

Vlad: Shh! Therefore i'd like to conclude with the thoughts of the bitchy little non agreeing.... So why don't you like our amazing products?

Daisy: I just didn't think-

Vlad: Exactly! You didn't think did you!

Amber: But we loved them!

(Lights out, the girls screech about how the products are itchy and hurting them)

Focus Groups

Focus groups

- Research in which a group of people are asked about their perceptions, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes towards a product, service, concept, advertisement, idea or packaging.

The Lidl advert is a great representation of a focus group. They were asked about the taste of the product and had given their opinions and attitudes to form qualitative data.

Focus group scene ideas:

- Lidl advert inspired
- Would you rather game
- Women and beauty
- Makeup, boob jobs, ageing cream, tanning, nails
- Extremist choices
- Iphone vs Nokia, Tanned vs Pale, Makeup vs Natural
- Facts on product "9/10 women..."
- Based on capitalism (profits and making goods)
- Cheesy music
- Bimbos
- Slap and tickle
- Target market (women/bimbos)

  • Focus group research involves organised discussion with a selected group of individuals to gain information about their views and experiences of a topic.
  • Focus group interviewing is particularly suited for obtaining several perspectives about the same topic.
  • The benefits of focus group research include gaining insights into people’s shared understandings of everyday life and the ways in which individuals are influenced by others in a group situation.
  • Problems arise when attempting to identify the individual view from the group view, as well as in the practical arrangements for conducting focus groups.
  • The role of the moderator is very significant. Good levels of group leadership and interpersonal skill are required to moderate a group successfully.

The focus group within this video are unable to form opinions on a book due to misunderstanding. However the video clearly addressed the purpose for a focus group which is to ask questions that provoke meaningful answers based on what they have seen.

The aldi brand comparison advert shows peoples opinions based on similar products but different brands. Although there is a comedic side, the focus group used within filming the full length of the advert were all diverse people testing different products.

I am inspired by the taste test adverts from Lidl and Aldi. I would like to create a scene similar to these adverts by conducting a 'Would you rather' test on beauty products on extreme levels to highlight capitalism trying to gain profits and win people over. The polar opposites may include:
- Large boobs or small boobs
- Dark tan or pale
- Extra long nails or no nails
All of which are subjective to the stereotype of a 'Bimbo woman'. I believe by choosing this idea we address many political issues such as sexism, stereotypes and capitalism.

270 words of my existence

Born and raised in south London her entire life, Amber now lives as an aspiring actress. Her ambition to become successful started as a young child as she was inspired by her hard working family. She didn’t grow up with a lot however she is always grateful and has the drive to earn what she gets. She was always taught to never let anybody tell her no. During a family separation Amber grew up far quicker than the rest of her peers as decision making was key. Standing out from others, she became aware of handling difficult situations and moving on. As maturity settled in she began to dream big and as taught, she didn’t let anybody get in her way. Now studying to become an actress (inspired by her close mother) Amber also works in the fashion industry. Although her main focus is acting, she is also on the journey to discovering and learning new paths in life. These include fashion, beauty and art. By setting goals in life she is able to succeed. At a young age she has much to offer and much to yet experience. Her independence allows her to travel and gain experience in working and education. Having very few people she can rely on has taught her about morals and independence. “Being let down teaches you how to bring yourself back up, everything I do is now for myself.” Having strong opinions and wit about her allows her to progress through life. Currently she is content with life as everything she dreamt of for her age, she has got due to her own determination.

Research on capitalism

Capitalism

An economic and political system in which as country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

Capitalists are described as thinking rationally and practically. People consider them to 'work with the system'. This means capitalism people work by the laws that are already set in place as these are what they understand as 'practical'. On the other hand socialists think about the benefit of others. People tend to suggest that most capitalist views are from the upper to middle classes whereas socialists views are from the working class.

Capitalists think about the economic system and private ownership. (The new debate on making the NHS privatised comes from capitalist opinions). Capitalists also think about producing goods and services for profit. Everything becomes privatised, this could include NHS services, education etc.

Capitalism has existed under many forms of government at many different times, places and cultures.

Political protest analysis

Political protest analysis

On the day of our performance we decided on setting up the space to create the atmosphere before doing a dress rehearsal. We printed out posters of real life images of child soldiers and advertising campaign posters. Our target slogans to the audience was "Child Soldiers. Two words shouldn't be put together." and "Did you forget?"

Throughout the research process we discovered that the political issue of child soldiers were somewhat forgotten and shadowed by issues such as ISIS. However doing more research we discovered that 250,000 child soldiers were in the world today and 40% of those were women used as sex slaves. This is how we came up with incorporating child soldiers and sex exploitation as one and they are under the same umbrella theme. It was important to know the facts of the issue we were covering in case we were approached on it during the protest.

The setting we used mirrored the theme of child soldiering being hidden in peoples minds, therefore we chose to use a space hidden behind a popular area. This space was behind the canteen on the stage surrounded by trees and posts. On the posts we put posters up with slogans, real life images, child drawings and facts. All of which were relevant to the audience as not only did it create atmosphere but it was also informative.

Costume was a large part of our performance in order to make it clear to the audience who plays what character. We used a Bretchian technique of placards to highlight to the audience the position of the child soldiers and sex slaves including their ages. On the placards we wrote "Child Soldier #206 Age: 7" written in children's handwriting to propose the fact of under education.

The costumes were all uniform with one another as this replicated the severity and strictness of the world of child soldiering. The sex slave outfits included ripped tshirts and smudged make up to depict the theme of abuse. Other props were used to engage our audience more, these included ropes, toy guns and bandana's. All of which we associate with having fun growing up. This projects to our audience the lack of childhood the child soldiers have.

To improve our audience capacity we decided to march a route where the soldiers followed the commander as he dragged through the sex slaves tied on rope. The commander shouted facts. "250,000 CHILD SOLDIERS IN THE WORLD TODAY. DID YOU FORGET?" this allowed the audience to interpret what we were doing and also for us to provoke a response from them. Audience members followed us throughout the route and onto the main part of the protest where the sex slaves were tied to posts as the soldiers performed their training exercises.

The challenging part of the protest was staying in character as audience members tried to distract us. We had audience members take our props and come up in our faces, however the more we stayed in character the more serious our protest became to the audience where they realised what we were addressing was an important issue. Furthermore i'm glad we chose to march through a route in order to gain the audiences attention throughout the school and onto the stage where we would protest and what we were doing became more clear. Our posters and costume had bought our entire protest together where there was a high level of seriousness to the atmosphere we wanted to create.

To improve our performance if we were to do it again, i would choose to advertise what we were doing across the entire school so people were bombarded with the facts and harsh reality. During our research the most upsetting issue was finding out people had forgotten about this issue as it has been shadowed by other issues in the world. Although attacks by ISIS and other groups include child soldiers and females wrongly exploited to the sex trade. Furthermore we would make it even clearer to the audience that the guns were toy guns. The initial idea was to use water guns however we were unable to find some for the group therefore we resulted in using replicas to real guns. Using water guns would of showed the audience how the child soldiers are still children at heart however they have been deprived from their childhood.

Overall I think the protest went well as I believe we really incorporated the audience's up to date views on the issue. Despite using facts and real life images of child soldiers the routine we had created was affective as it showed the cruelty to the children and the reality of their ages. All of the work we done was reflective of real life stories and research we had done. I believe we attracted the audience's attention as much as possible and created a perfect, realistic atmosphere in order for the audience to understand the reality of child soldiers.

250,000 child soldiers in the world today. Did you forget?

Labels

Labels

Labels is a solo performed show based on a true story of a character/actors upbringing and the challenges his faced with being labelled. A major political factor introduced during this piece was racism. The play allows the audience to reconsider the way we use words and the affects in which what we say can be offensive and deviant. Although unfortunately this social issue is brushed under the carpet, Labels is an interesting way on informing people.

I found the performance was directed cleverly, keeping the audiences attention on the single standing actor. A Brecht technique of placards were incorporated frequently throughout the show, i found this affective as it was a representation of the amount of labels we have and give others on a day to day basis (some of these may be offensive). Labels is an honest representation of emotions people go through as an affect of an issue, however as the performance drew to a close the result was uplifting as the character finds happiness within the labels he had or perhaps was given.

"Powerful, important and funny."

My opinion on the piece as a whole was positive as I believe it informed current issues by addressing a real life story however it wasn't disheartening. Comedic and interactive parts of the performance allowed me to feel comfortable approaching the matter and informed rather than blamed for being part of a society that tackles this matter. Amongst the deep topic of racism were smaller lessons such as being safe online and considering who we talk to. I found the performance relevant to a younger audience (much like ourselves) as it teaches the values of later life and allows us to make a changing approach to the way we say things. Overall an enlightening performance with great Brecht techniques to allow me to take things from the play into everyday life.

Using Brechts techniques

Using Brechts techniques:

Exercise:

- A naturalistic scene:
Person 1: Loves person 2
Person 2: Doesn't like person 1
Person 3: Wants to kill both person 1 and 2

My group decided to perform a love triangle scene where all gets revealed in the end where 'person 3' has a hatred for both characters. During the performance it was clear to see that 'person 1' loved 'person 2' however 'person 2' didn't show a mutual interest.

Adapting naturalistic scenes:

Exercise:

- Do the same scene with narration on every movement we made

The use of narration during our scene added a comedic value to the performance. Each minute detail of people walking, having a shower, opening a door etc was explained to the audience. This had the affect of making the audience feel stupid and gave the impression that everything was laid out for them.

Other techniques and their affects:

- Narration (Adds comedy and creates the V affect)
- Thinking out loud (Becomes emotive and gritty whilst shocking the audience)
- Montage (Showing the progression through time allowing the audience to face opinions on this)
- Gestus (Over the top emotion making minute details have extreme clarity)
- Slap and tickle (Deeper moments are shocking, using comedy to make things a lighter topic and the V affect)
- Song (Becomes relative and intrigues the audience with comedic moments and clarity of intentions)
- Placards (Revealing to the audience)

Bertolt Brecht'

Bertolt Brecht'

- Brecht was both a playwright, producer and director of his own and other peoples plays
- His theatrical theories came from Marxist notion

"Marxism is a method of socio-economic analysis, originating from the mid-to-late 19th century works of German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, that analyzes class relations and societal conflict using a materialist interpretation of historical development and a dialectical view of social transformation."

- He was influenced by expressionism
- He was convinced that theatre should be an agent of social and political change
- Brecht wanted theatre to be a slap in the face

Some of Brecht's techniques:

- Song
- Gestus
- Placards
- Robotic or dreamlike movement
- Voice and movement not matching
- Speaking as if quoting
- Humour in sad scenes
- Directly addressing the audience
- Actors exchanging roles/playing multiple roles
(This was all used to create the V affect)

The V Affect:

"The brechtian style of acting is acting in quotation marks"

Gestus:

- Expressing basic human attitudes. He wanted to create a style where expressing attitudes were stylized and made clear as suppose to Stanislavski techniques of working out what characters portray
- Making overt, grand but simple gestures. For example making it clear (perhaps overly apparent) the character feels despair
- The illusion of naturalistic disorder

My opinions on Brecht theatre:

I think he created amazing techniques to diversely make something clear. Although his methods are somewhat over the top they allow the audience to consider messages hidden behind a front or even what were are seeing at face value. Gestus is a way of showing emotion or intention and the idea of using this makes the audience consider is it real or a hidden way of communication? The V affect makes the audience aware they are watching a performance this allows us to consider a reflection of society and for audience members not to be emotionally connected to characters (this can be useful particularly in politically devised pieces). Instead I believe Brecht wants his audience members to notice the reflection he is making and have an opinion on it. Doing further research I realised politicians found Brechts political theatre was dangerous as it opened up the audiences eyes to perceive things differently to how they want (perhaps the politicians make things sugar-coated).

Austerity

Austerity:

"In economics austerity is a set of policies with the aim of reducing government budget deficits. Austerity policies may include spending cuts, tac increases, or a mixture of both."

- Austerity policies generally increase unemployment in the short run

- Reduces jobs in the public or private sector (or both)

- Tax increases reduce household disposable income and consumption

- Government spending contributes to gross domestic products

- Reducing spending will produce more debts

- Debt is a burden to this country and its citizens

Research about child soldiers

Research about child soldiers:

Child soldiers are any children under the age of 18 who are recruited by a state or non-state armed group and used as fighters, cooks, suicide bombers, human shields, messengers, spies, or for sexual purposes.

There are an estimated 250,00 child soldiers in the world today

It is estimated that 40% of all child soldiers are girls and are used as sex slaves

Child soldiers are recruited by government forces as well as rebel group

Not all children take part in combat, some are used for cooks and spies

Children are sometimes forced to kill a main family member

Some children are abducted from their homes to become child soldiers

Villages are made to produce a certain amount of child soldiers in exchange that their village will remain safe in attacks

The above video is advertising a UK based charity who work towards giving children an education in order to prevent child soldiers from appearing across the world.

AN EDUCATED, PROTECTED CHILD IS UNLIKELY TO BECOME A CHILD SOLDIER

The above slogan is what the charity use to appeal this case to an audience. I think it is a bold term as it highlights the work the organisation do to prevent child soldiering and how the right of an education in which children are to have will not only help progress their lives but also protect their safety.

In the last 15 years, the use of child soldiers has spread to almost every region of the world and every armed conflict

Thousands of child soldiers are illegally serving in armed conflict around the world

Some children are under the age of 10 when they are forced to serve

"Two-thirds of states confirm that enrolment of soldiers under the age of 18 should be banned to prohibit forced child soldiers, as well as 16- and 17-year-old armed force volunteers."

Children who are poor, displaced from their families, have limited access to education, or live in a combat zone are more likely to be forcibly recruited

Children who are not forced to be soldiers volunteer themselves because they feel societal pressure and are under the impression that volunteering will provide a form of income, food, or security, and willingly join the group

"In the last 2 years, 20 states have been reported to have child soldiers in government, government-affiliated, and non-state armed groups. Additionally, 40 states still have minimum age recruitment requirements under 18 years."

"Girls make up an estimated 10 to 30 percent of child soldiers used for fighting and other purposes. They are especially vulnerable when it comes to sexual violence."

A few of the countries who have reported use of child soldiers since 2011 are Afghanistan, Colombia, India, Iraq, Israel, Libya, Mali, Pakistan, Thailand, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen

The recruitment of child soldiers breaks several human rights laws

A film based of child soldiers:

Above is the trailer to the film 'Beasts of no nation' about child soldiers and the exploitation of this within Africa. It is about a young boy who survives as his country goes through a horrific war.
